Morrisons Look To Fontaine For Safe
And Easy Vehicle Coupling

WM Morrison Supermarkets plc is placing emphasis on safe and secure vehicle coupling to ensure trouble free handling for drivers and safe coupling of tractor and trailer units.

With 476 stores in the UK, Morrisons operate their own 700-strong vehicle fleet on a 24/7 basis, virtually every day of the year.

Tractor and trailer coupling is a constant process and very often performed during the night. Therefore, it is important for drivers to maximise safety and ease of handling.

The fifth wheel coupler, specified by Morrisons from Fontaine Europe, features an extended handle which allows easy operation without having to reach under the trailer. This not only avoids contact with the underside of the trailer but also provides a safety benefit.

The Fontaine fifth wheel also incorporates a unique mechanism which prevents mis-coupling when tractors reverse onto the trailer during coupling. This ensures that the jaw of the coupler engages with the trailer king pin and locks securely into place.

John Ward, from Morrisons’ transport division comments:
“Our busy schedule involves a significant number of couplings round the clock and that’s why it’s important to have the right fifth wheel to guard against mishaps and to provide easy driver handling.”

Morrisons was established in 1899 and is now the fourth largest supermarket chain in the UK. Fontaine Europe, based in Warrington, Cheshire produces a range of fifth wheel couplers and trailer landing legs for the European commercial vehicle market and is a subsidiary of the Berkshire Hathaway Company.
